Winchcombe Camping & Caravanning Club Site 14
Brooklands Farm, Alderton, Gloucestershire GL20 8NX
Pitches around a small fishing lake, run by friendly, diligent wardens, in the Cotswolds. Tewkesbury’s timber-framed buildings on the River Avon are less than a 10-minute drive away. Cheltenham, to the south west, hosts jazz and literature festivals.
Ducks add to the ambience of calm as they amble from pitch to pitch looking for grubs and handouts. Anglers fish for carp and chub from wooden swims set around the edge of a well-stocked lake. Carp as large as eight pounds are regularly caught. Spam works best. There are very few rules, apart from a strange one: no maggots. I was told that several years ago a rogue angler carelessly tossed some unused bait on the ground. A camper arrived and unknowingly pitched an awning over the maggots, which several days later hatched into flies and ruined the family’s holiday. I’m not entirely sure about the veracity of the story (I haven’t checked it officially), but it’s an interesting tale.
Many of the 90 pitches surround the circle of the lake, although not all get a view, as bushes and fruit trees shelter much of the water. Wardens are knowledgeable and friendly and keep the site spotless. Showers and loos are clean. Electricity is provided with the pitch fee. Wi-Fi is available, but doesn’t cover the entire camp. The lake has open access to the front, but is gated and fenced at the back for families with young children. A small ball area in the children’s play area is also a handy extra for families. The site shop sells local free-range eggs and apple juice from a nearby farm. Hayles Fruit Farm produces and stocks a range of fruit juices and has an outlet in Winchcombe. The Gardeners Arms is the nearest pub, but there are at least four more nearby. A fish-and-chip van visits twice a week. The village of Alderton is nearby.
